Ontario Rebates 2026

Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program 2026: Complete Guide

Updated May 2026 · Verified current

The Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS) launched January 28, 2025 as Ontario's replacement for the old Greener Homes Grant and HER+ program — both now closed. It's delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy with Ontario Government support, backed by a $10.9 billion commitment. The program runs through November 30, 2026.

The bottom line: HRS is the main home energy rebate in Ontario right now. It covers heat pumps, insulation, windows, solar, air sealing, thermostats, and water heaters — all in one program with two flexible application paths.

Path A — Assessment Required (Bundled Upgrades)

Choose this path if you are combining multiple upgrades — insulation + heat pump, windows + air sealing, or solar + battery. This path unlocks the highest rebate totals but requires a pre-retrofit energy assessment before any work begins.

The golden rule of Path A: Book the assessment first. Do not purchase equipment. Do not schedule contractors. Do not remove any existing insulation or drywall. The assessment must happen while your home is in its current state.

Path B — No Assessment Required (Single Upgrades)

Choose this if you are doing one targeted upgrade and want minimal paperwork. Heat pumps, smart thermostats, and standalone attic insulation all qualify under Path B. You work directly with a registered contractor and apply after the work is done.

Who Qualifies?

Cornwall Electric customers: If your electricity is supplied by Cornwall Electric, you are connected to the Hydro-Québec grid and NOT eligible, unless you are converting to or from Enbridge Gas.

The 5 Most Common Mistakes That Get Rebates Denied

  1. Starting work before the assessment — instant disqualification for Path A
  2. Using a non-registered contractor — rebates require certified installers only
  3. Missing the submission deadline — applications must be submitted within program timelines after work is complete
  4. Using non-eligible equipment — heat pumps must be on the NRCan qualified products list
  5. Poor documentation — missing the ENERGY STAR certification number on invoices is the most common delay cause

Stacking HRS With Federal Programs

Oil-heated homes in Ontario can stack HRS with the federal OHPA program for a combined total potentially exceeding $22,000. Income-qualified households should apply to OHPA through their energy advisor when booking the pre-retrofit assessment.
